“Thoughts Become Things and What We Focus on Expands”
One of the very first things that began to open me up to a new way of thinking and being was hearing that “thoughts become things” and “what we focus on expands”.
Up until that point, I hadn’t really been aware of how my thinking was affecting my day to day life and experiences. I felt that life was something that was happening to me, and I was rolling with it as best as I knew how.
At this particular time in my life, my marriage was falling apart. I was afraid and living in a constant state of overwhelm. I felt powerless and uncertain about what I should do and how to change things.
The shift that happened was absolutely huge for me as I sat with this new idea that my thoughts manifest into real things and that what I focus on gets bigger. It was like a light bulb had switched on. Where my attention goes – it grows.
I began to realize that what I was feeling in my day-to-day life was a direct result of what I was focusing on and thinking about. And most importantly, if this was true, I got to choose and get to choose what it’ll be. When I didn’t want to feel afraid, overwhelmed, and powerless, I began to shift my attention to something that feels better. What started to happen in my life was nothing short of a miracle.
I decided I would begin a gratitude journal. I kept track of three things each day that I was thankful for, no matter how small, and then wrote them down in my journal at the end of the day.
This forced me to consciously look for the positivity in my day and focus on all that I had to be happy about – I found there is always something to be happy about, even if it’s just the gift of living and breathing air. I’d practice gratitude for absolutely anything I could.
If I had an argument with someone and was upset, I’d turn my attention to the fact that the sun was shining through the window, and take a moment to experience gratitude for it. If my daughters were laughing, I took a moment to feel grateful for the laughter and joy they were sharing. If I was enjoying a warm cup of coffee, I’d quietly expressed gratitude for that.
As I practiced this daily, more and more incredible things began to show up when I least expected them – things I was ecstatically thankful for. Choosing to live in a state of gratitude rewards us with more reasons to be grateful. It completely transformed my day-to-day life.
I began to experience more joy on a day-to-day basis, and my life opened up in ways I couldn’t have ever imagined. People and things showed up when I needed them most. Synchronicities were everywhere.
I wrote down those two quotes and put them anywhere I knew I’d see them daily… on my bathroom mirror, on my night stand, on the fridge, and in my car! They became my mantras. It was a constant reminder for me to be aware of what I was thinking and to take responsibility for my thoughts.
I can’t even tell you how much this changed my life! I want to encourage you to do the same. I promise you, you won’t regret it! Write down your two new mantras:
• “Thoughts Become Things”
• “What We Focus On Expands”
Put them wherever you will see them – in one special spot or all over the place!
Start a gratitude journal and make it your daily routine to write down three things you’re grateful for. Take a moment to really experience the feeling of gratitude as you write them down and – watch out – I absolutely guarantee your life will begin to shift and change in ways you can’t even imagine possible!
When you focus on what is good in your life – you create more of it!
